Latvian cooking traditions and eating customs

Latvia is located in a temperate climatic zone with fairly long and cold winters and warm, short summers. Due to the harsh climate and relatively poor soil quality Latvians have always worked hard to provide food for themselves and their families. Typical Latvian food and drink recipes

Grey Peas with Bacon

200 g (7oz) grey peas, 60g (2.1oz) smoked or unsmoked streaky bacon, 40g (1.4oz) onion, salt.

Soak peas, then cover with hot water and boil until tender. Dice bacon and onion and sauté. Serve drained peas in individual clay bowls, adding fried bacon mixture to each serving. Serve with a drink of rūgušpiens (curdled milk). Beans with fresh bacon are also prepared in this way. Discover more >

Riga Gourmet Routes

In order to promote the popularity, quality and awareness of Riga hospitality enterprises,  restaurants and cafes, the  Riga City Council,  in collaboration with the Association of Hotels and Restaurants of Latvia have developed a new tourism product - “Riga Gourmet routes”.

Three “Riga gourmet routes” are offered:
•    Old City
•    Art Nouveau
•    Pardaugava (Left Bank of the Daugava River)
The routes offer a chance to try meals in 14 restaurants.
“Riga Gourmet routes” also offers a discount card that allows its bearer a 10% discount for individual a la carte meals at the restaurants and cafés participating in the project. Discounts are valid until December 31, 2009.

You can get your route map at Riga Tourist and Coordination Center, Hotel Riga Information Centre (Aspazijas blv. 22), at largest hotels in Riga or in internet.
